09:00 - 09:30 Macroeconomic landscape of Qatar and the consequences for infrastructure development
Eugene McQuaid, Senior Economist / Strategy Planning,IDI Middle East, Government of Saudi Arabia
In light of the first national development strategy (NDS)
coming to end this presentation will reflect on the successes,
challenges and lessons learnt over the last decade of
development. It will explore the opportunities and needs of
future infrastructure development that lay in the impending
second NDS.

09:30 - 10:00 THE MAINTENANCE GAP: the need for implementing an asset management system: Institutional Requirements
Dr. Robert Smith, Team Leader & Road Management Specialist,
Road and bridge infrastructure is the foundation and most important asset for most countries and their societies therefore it is critical for governments and all stakeholders to prioritise and position themselves to maintain and improve an efficient and sustainable and efficient road network.
- From the “short-term spending” traditional approach to a holistic and preventative approach
- Developing the process by incorporating decisive criteria
- Taking the next steps
Dr. Robert Smith
Team Leader & Road Management Specialist10:00 - 10:30 Optimising bridge designs by means of comparing different analyses techniques
Walid Azzi, Head of Discipline – Bridges,SSH
Numerous structural analysis methods could be utilised
to estimate load effects on bridge decks. These vary from
simplified line beams to sophisticated 3-d models using
numerical approximations. Depending on a number of factors
such as local requirements and knowledge, availability of time,
budget constraints etc. the more simplified methods tend to be
preferred. Academic studies comparing various methods are
widely published, however it is seldom that such comparisons
are undertaken in a design office for ‘real structures’.
This presentation aims at comparing the results of a full
3-dimensional shell analysis with line beams for 5 road posttensioned
bridges with varying structural forms, plan curvatures
and span lengths. These bridges are currently being designed
for a road improvement project in Bahrain.

12:00 - 12:30 Upgrading and repairing of existing structures in the Gulf
Walid Farahat, Senior Project Manager,KEO Consultants
There are many challenges faced in building in the region’s corrosive environment and therefore there are often asset testing and repair works that are required. The challenge in this lays in repairing the current failures whilst also preventing future maintenance issues. The following presentation will offer ideas and insights on overcoming these challenges.
